Houston Astros baseball attendance champs in Texas

SAN ANTONIO (Texas News Radio) — The number of people who show up for a professional baseball game is a good indicator for team support.

In 2018, the Astros have taken that crown away from the Rangers.

The Astros saw a 19 percent increase in attendance after they won the World Series in 2017 to welcome nearly 3 million fans to Minute Maid Park.  That is the most since 2007.

Meanwhile, the Rangers saw the opposite happen, with the team now barely above the 2 million fan mark.

Both teams were in the 2.4-2.5 million ballpark in 2017.

In the minor league ranks, the Round Rock Express handily takes the attendance crowd.  In fact, it was the third-best in all of Minor League Baseball, only behind Charlotte and Indianapolis.

Round Rock’s 8,809 average attendance puts it in range of Miami’s woefully low 10,013 average attendance.  In fact, both Florida MLB teams were dead last in attendance, with Tampa Bay getting just over 1 million people into its stadium.

Frisco was the best performing AA team in the nation.  San Antonio barely had the second-best average attendance in the state, though was hurt in the overall attendance numbers because of three cancelled home games.  San Antonio will be moving up into AAA in 2019, already outperforming the Colorado Springs team it will be replacing.

Sugar Land continued its strength in the independent league ranks, ranking fourth-best in the nation among non-affiliated teams.  It was third-best in the Atlantic League, despite its closest rival being over 1,200 miles away.

Nationally, the Associated Press says Major League Baseball’s average attendance at ballparks dropped 4 percent to 28,830.  The average is down over 14 percent from its peak of 32,785 in 2007 and has not been this low since 2003, where an average ball game had 28,013 in attendance.

Jones: Cowboys worth $10 billion, not for sale

SAN ANTONIO (Texas News Radio) — Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has no plans to sell the team.

But if he did, he said he’d only sell it for $10 billion.

“If I had to sell the team tomorrow I wouldn’t accept anything less than $10 billion. But, I don’t want to imply that I would take $10 billion for them,” Jones told Bloomberg. “The Cowboys are just not for sale.”

The owner said he considers the team to be a long-term asset and will remain with the family after he dies.

“I don’t say $10 billion just to say a ridiculous number. I just think you really have to go on what people would pay,” Jones said. “I don’t want to say at least $10 billion but I certainly think you can justify a $10 billion value, but economically I’d rather have the Cowboys than the $10 billion.”

Bloomberg said it values the team at $4 billion.

Two minor league pitchers look alike, share same name

SAN ANTONIO (Texas News Radio) — Have you ever met your doppelganger — someone who looks just like you?

What if they had the same name as you and did the same type of work as you?

That’s the case for Brady Feigl and Brady Feigl.

They are both redheaded, wear glasses and are minor league pitcher.  They even had the same surgery — Tommy John surgery — done by the same doctor.

But that’s where their uncanny likeness ends.

One Brady Feigl is 27, left-handed and pitches in the Texas Rangers minor league system with stints in Round Rock and Frisco.

The other Brady Feigel is 22, right-handed and was recently signed by the Oakland Athletics, getting some early playing time at the Single-A level.

Austin approves new stadium agreement with Columbus Crew

The Austin city council has agreed to move forward with a new MLS stadium.

SAN ANTONIO (Texas News Radio) — The Austin city council has agreed to move forward with a new MLS stadium.

The council voted 7-4 in favor of leasing land to Precourt Sports Ventures Wednesday afternoon.

Members of the council were concerned about the money the city would need to put into the project, as well as lost revenues from using it for soccer instead of other development proposals.

The vote allows the owners of the Columbus Crew to begin building a new 20,000 seat stadium near The Domain in North Austin.
