SAN ANTONIO (Texas News Radio) — The biggest reason President Donald Trump announced his plans to come to Texas to support Sen. Ted Cruz may be Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.
Politico reports the lieutenant governor made a trip to the White House in late July to beg officials there to have the president make a campaign trip.
Patrick was Trump’s 2016 campaign chairman in Texas and appears to have still have some influence on the White House.
Patrick’s meeting had previously not been reported.
Polls show Cruz with a slight lead in the polls over El Paso Rep. Beto O’Rourke. That has many Republicans concerned about the race being too close for comfort.
Sen. John Cornyn plans to host a fundraiser for Cruz in Washington next month. He called O’Rourke a serious threat, but did say if everyone does there job, he’s confident the incumbent will win another term.
